Thumbnail Filmstrip of 1st Armored Division Patch Images
"Old Ironsides" (1940-1946); It was the first armored division of the U.S. Army to see battle in WWII.
Armored Forces sleeve patches used by early Armored Divisions
& later independent tank battalions.
The borders of our Armoured patches are the correct color for WWII- sage green. (They were never "khaki".)
Usually they were placed 1/2"-1" under the shoulder seam. The current unit was sewn to the left sleeve, while any previous unit might be placed on the right sleeve.
In the early to mid-war period, independent tank battalions used the plain "Armored Force" patch, then started to use the numbered ones by around 1944. Armored division personnel mostly wore their appropriate divisional patch.
