Due to German law prohibiting the swastika the WW2 version of
this medal could not be worn by its recipients. In 1957 the
Federal Republic of Germany authorized alternative
'de-nazified' replacement versions of World War II period
war decorations. The eagle and swastika were simply taken
off this badge.
