The Order of the Red Eagle was an Imperial German award given to both military personnel and civilians, to recognise valour in combat, excellence in military leadership, long and faithful service to the kingdom, or other achievements. As with most German orders, the Order of the Red Eagle could only be awarded to commissioned officers or civilians of approximately equivalent status.
By the time of WW1, the award had evolved into six classes. This is the Grand Cross version - the highest class. Typically awarded only to male members of the royal family, to members of the Order of the Black Eagle, to noblemen, and to foreign royalty, this award was one of the highest honours of Imperial Germany.
